Middlesbrough Ironopolis F.C. was an English professional association football club based in the town of Middlesbrough, in northern England. The club was founded as Ironopolis F.C. in 1889, and played solely friendlies for the first season following their formation. Despite the team's short existence, they won the Northern League for three consecutive seasons between 1890 and 1893.[1] The club was accepted into the Football League Second Division for the 1893–1894 season and changed its name to Middlesbrough Ironopolis. They finished 11th and resigned from the league, and the club consequently folded.[2]
The side also had success in the FA Cup, England's foremost domestic competition. In the 1890–91 and 1891–92 campaigns, the side reached the First Round proper.[2] In 1892–93, the side achieved their best result in the competition, reaching the Quarter Final stage before being knocked out by Preston North End.[2] In the club's final season, they reached the Second Round.[2]
